Stainless Steel Polyurethane Paint for Metal(+)

Anticorrosive, Heat & Wear Resistant, Food Safe, Easy to Apply

Stainless Steel Polyurethane Paint for Metal(+)The STEEL-IT Polyurethane Coating System features a unique stainless steel leafing pigment, and provides optimum weather-, abrasion-, and corrosion-resistance in general maintenance applications. The easy to apply system yields a hard, non-toxic, metallic finish that protects a multitude of metallic and non-metallic surfaces from ultraviolet rays, chemicals, oils, alkalis, food acids, water immersion, abrasion, and high-pressure washdowns. Comprised of STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 applied over STEEL-IT Weathering Primer #2203, the system adheres to surfaces aggressively, and is ideal for protecting structural steel and other metals. These single component coatings require no complicated mixing. Applied as they come from the can, they are air dried and require no baking or heating. USDA-approved for use in the food processing and handling industry where incidental food contact may occur, STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 blends polyurethane resin with Type 316L stainless steel leafing pigment to produce a rugged, non-toxic, satiny metallic finish. STEEL-IT Primer #2203 combines a modified alkyd resin, selected silicates, and iron oxides with Type 316L leafing pigment to produce a long-lasting primer for structural steel and other metals requiring good rust-inhibiting qualities.

STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 and Primer #2203 are packaged in quarts and gallons. The #1002 Polyurethane is also available in handy aerosols for easy touch-ups and small jobs. Conventional or airless spraying is the preferred application method, however, they may also be applied easily by brush or roller.

Atmospheric Service in Light-Moderate Duty Areas. -

  • 1 coat - STEEL-IT Alkyd Weathering Primer #2203
  • 1 coat - STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 (within 4-24 hours of applying 2203 Primer)

Heavy Duty Service. -

  • 1 coat - STEEL-IT Alkyd Weathering Primer #2203
  • 2 coats - STEEL-IT Polyurethane #1002 (within 4-24 hours of applying 2203 Primer)

General use in light atmospheric service. -

  • Hand or power tool clean (SSPC-SP-2 and -3) after thoroughly removing all oils, salts and other contaminants.

Heavy Duty Service. -

  • Sandblast to an SSPC-SP-6 (commercial blast)
  • Anchor pattern should be cut and angular (1.5-2.0 mils deep).

General use. -

  • 1 coat of #2203 (3.0 dry mils)
  • 1 coat of #1002 (3.0 dry mils minimum)

Heavy Duty use. -

  • 1 coat of #2203 (3.0 dry mils)
  • 2 coats of #1002 (3.0 dry mils per coat)
  • Film thickness on blasted surfaces should be measured up from the peaks of the anchor pattern.
  • Conventional spray techniques use a Binks #62 Gun with a 68PB Air Cap and a 66 Fluid Tip or similar equipment.
  • Airless application use a DeVilbiss JGB-501 airless gun combination with a fluid tip orifice between 0.015 and 0.021. Pump ratio should be at least 28:1 or other compatible combinations.
  • #2203 Primer is a fast drying material that is touch dry in 1 hour and should be recoated between 4 and 24 hours.
  • #1002 is dry to touch in 2 hours and should be recoated within 24 hours.
  • The finished system can be put into light service in 36 hours. The system will continue to cure to maximum hardness and protection for 5-10 days.
  • #2203 Red Primer: theoretical coverage - 200 sq. ft./gallon at 3.0 dry mil.
  • #1002 Finish: theoretical coverage - 150 sq. ft./gallon at 3.0 dry mil.
In practice these values will be reduced at least 25% by loss factors.
  • Thinning is not recommended - only when mandatory.
  • Air spray may require small amounts of mineral spirits, high flash naptha, xylene or toluene.
  • Clean up with mineral spirits or xylene.
  • Apply only when surface and ambient temperatures are above 40° F
  • Relative humidity must be less than 86%.
  • Surface temperature must be at least 5° F above dew point.
  • Recommended for Surfaces where operating temperatures will not exceed 200° F.
