Steel Corrosion Prevention with Steel-It® Industrial Protective Coatings for Steel Surfaces

steel corrosionOf all the metals used by humans, iron and its alloys, are by far the most common, notably the various types and grades of steel. They are subject to multiple forms of corrosion, among which common rust is the most familiar.Steel-It® coatings, custom formulated with protective 316L stainless steel flake, are ideal for preventing most forms of steel corrosion in industrial contexts. Steel is prized most of all not for its corrosion resistance, but rather for its durability, easy manufacture, and low cost. Steels are, fundamentally, alloys of iron and carbon with small amounts of elements (e.g. manganese and silicon) that provide steel’s desired mechanical properties. Historically, stainless steel (created by the English metallurgist Harry Brearley on 13 August 1913) came as an afterthought. But even stainless steel is subject to corrosion. Steels and low-alloy steels rust in humid atmospheres, with the rusting increasing dramatically in the presence of pollution. (Did you know that hydrated ferric oxide – Fe(OH)3, a.k.a. rust – occupies roughly six times the volume of the original steel?)

Steel-It coatings put up extra layers of resistance on all types of industrial steel surfaces. In the old says, before corrosion protection, when you made a layer of steel, you would factor in the predictable losses to corrosion and make the steel thick enough to last long enough under the expected corrosion rate. Luckily, nowadays this isn’t necessary: we have Steel-It® protective industrial coatings for steel surfaces, steel structures, and equipment. Carbon steel, alloy steel, mild steel, hard steel, stainless steel, you name it: Steel-It specialty industrial paints from Stainless Steel Coatings Inc protect all types and grades of steel against many common types of corrosion, with the added benefits of high heat and wear resistance.
